The Limits of Human Vision

Charles S Johnson, Jr. says in his book, Science for the Curious Photographer, that “Photography is a human activity that depends on the entirely on the capabilities and limitations of the human visual system.” We as humans tend to judge the apparent resolution, contrast levels, whether it is over exposed or under exposed, the quality of the color in a photograph, but these parts that we judge are subjective because everything depends on our level of vision and perception. If someone with really bad vision views the same amazing photograph that a person with amazing vision sees, they will have two different perspectives on it because while one of them sees it as a blurry picture, one of them sees it as an amazingly clear picture. As such, a photograph does need to be good for it to be seen by many people, but it’s quality does depend on what people are viewing it. If you are only showing it in an elderly home, then it doesn’t necessarily have to be as perfect as possible. However, anywhere else, it should be as perfect as you can possibly make it.

Do We Need Filters Anymore?

There are three types of filters to consider. The most important one is the polarizing filter, or the PL filter. This gives control over reflections from glass, water, other shiny and semi- reflective (but not as reflective as a mirror) surfaces, as well as from light scattered from the sky. And then there are neutral density filters, or ND filters. These filters are very helpful for shoots and scenes where there are extreme variations in brightness, such as a dark foreground with a very bright but cloudy sky. They can also help emphasize movement and motion by letting you set a long exposure, or in other words, a blurriness of sorts when someone or something moves quickly, such as when a soccer player is running and he kicks the ball. The last type of filter is the color filter. The effects of this filter can be simulated by digital processing, or editing. Therefore, they are not often used anymore except for when there is visible light that must be blocked, such as in UV or IR photography.

How to Get Very High Magnification

The easiest and probably least expensive way to get a close-up or macro shot capability is to get one or more supplementary lenses. These are a screw-on lens that attaches like a filter, but supplementary lenses are most definitely not filters. These close-up lenses are often called diopters, or plus diopters, because their strength is rated in diopters. Another extremely common method to make any lens focus closer to an object, is to add a lens extension. An easy way to do this for a DSLR without spending a lot of money is to get and use a set of extension tubes. A set of these can be used individually between the lens and your camera’s body, or you can stack them to get even closer to the object.

What is an Equivalent Image?

In order to obtain an equivalent image, every single property that is listed below absolutely must be the exact same as all the others. I: Angle of View (or field of view) II: Perspective III: Depth-of-Field (DoF) IV: Diffraction Broadening V: Shutter speed/exposure According to this definition, two equivalent images would look exactly the same to any observer, no matter if there was one or two different cameras used. Charles S. Johnson, Jr. says in this book that “sensors with different sizes can be used to make identical images if the appropriate ranges of focal lengths, apertures, shutter speeds, and ISO sensitivities are available. This also assumes that lenses that sufficient resolving power and that the pixel density is high enough to not degrade resolution.

Wide-Angle Lenses, Fisheye Lenses, and Panoramas

Many problems can be found in the design of wide-angle lenses with large apertures. First of all are aberrations. Distortion is common, and correcting and editing images becomes more and more difficult as the focal length decreases. So how do lens designers make a lens that will not distort a image nearly as much in the center as a wide angle lens may? Well, if you’ve ever seen a image taken from a doorbell camera, that is what is called a fisheye lens. It is distorted somewhat, but as long as you have a decent brand, it isn’t blurry. They provide views that are larger than 180* degrees. These are often used in astronomy, meteorology, surgery, surveillance, doorbell cameras, and peepholes, among many other uses. Panoramas are made from a camera taking many many pictures and stitching them all together in the space of a few seconds to make an extra long or very tall photo, one that shows more than the human eye can see without moving your head from side to side or up and down. Panoramic images can be used for landscape photography, as well as for a cityscape or even a picture of an entire building that is very tall or full photo of a tall tree.

Why Does A Camera Need A Lens?

For those of you who may not have read my first post about this, please go back and read that one first – https://meghanalissasphotography05.photo.blog/?p=51

Hi all! I hope everyone’s week went well and have a great weekend!

Ps. I do occasionally add some things that I do not have on my essay for my teacher, such as in Chapter Four Summary that will be coming next Saturday, I say “Why you may ask? Well let me tell you!” Obviously, no teacher would accept that, although they might laugh before they crossed it out and took off points for it. (Trust me, I’ve tried lol)

Here is Chapter Four Summary!

Why Does A Camera Need A Lens

Well without a lens every single photograph would just be plain old white. No color, no outlines or shapes or form, nothing. Just like staring at a blank piece of computer paper when you are trying to figure out what to write for a creative writing project. A lens is kind of like the pupil in your eyeball. The bigger it is, the more light it lets in, and the brighter your photograph is. This is also known as higher exposure, because exposure is how much light is being exposed to your brain or photograph. However, the smaller your pupil is, the less light it lets in and therefore, the darker, or lower exposed, it is. Having the current amount of exposure is hugely important because otherwise, your photo would be way too dark, much too bright, or it would be extremely grainy. The shutter on your camera is what opens and closes a certain amount to let in the correct amount of light. A lens is also important cause it helps protect the inside of the camera from things like dust and dirt in the air. Even if you can’t see it with a naked eye, it WILL STILL LAND ON YOUR LENS AND THE INSIDE OF YOUR CAMERA! Every single lens is also built differently, so as long as you have the correct lens for your camera, or the right brand adapter, you can get pretty much any shot, whether it’s a close up macro shot of a grain of sand, a zoom shot from 500 feet away, portraits, landscapes, wide angles, and more! However, be extra careful if you are buying an adapter, and make sure it is from the same exact brand as your camera. Do not get a off brand, unless the reviews are really really really good for your exact brand of camera. It can absolutely ruin your camera if you get a wrong size, thread, etc.

An Introduction of the Camera.

Hi all! Sorry I haven’t posted in a while, but I promise (for real this time 😁 lol) that I’ll be posting at least once a week from now on.

I recently started a book called Science For The Curious Photographer : An Introduction To The Science Of Photography by Charles S. Johnson, Jr. (It looks like the below picture-) for a class and it’s really cool! But for this class, I have to write a summary/explanation of each chapter and that is graded instead of having a test or something similar. So I had a bit of a epiphany moment, and it went something like this: “ OOOOOOOH I COULD PUT EACH CHAPTER SUMMARY ON MY PHOTOGRAPHY BLOG AND THEN IF ANYONE READING IT HAS ANY OTHER QUESTIONS, THEY CAN JUST DM ME OR COMMENT THEIR QUESTIONS!!! WHY DIDN’T I THINK OF THIS SOONER?!” So yeah lol. There is my epiphany😂

I actually do not have a chapter summary of the first two chapters as they are really just summaries of the book themselves so my teacher excused them. So here is Chapter Three summary!!

Hope you enjoy! If you have any questions, suggestions, or additions, please feel free to let me know!! You can email me directly at meghanalissasphotography@gmail.com or you can put it in the comments. Thank you!

Ps. I do occasionally add some things that I do not have on my essay for my teacher, such as in Chapter Four Summary that will be coming next Saturday, I say “Why you may ask? An Introduction To The Camera: Chapter Three

A camera is essentially a box that is light proof to that contains a lens and a light sensor. Early in photography, you could buy an enlarger for photographs but the only professional way to take a large photo was to use a large camera. Most cameras nowadays are automated and are digital, not film. Even the current film cameras are just point and shoot, not adjusting a million different tiny little details to get a single picture. In fact, many people today currently only own a smartphone with a camera on it and not an actual dslr, slr, or point and shoot camera. After all, why buy a large camera when the one that mostly fits in your pocket has relatively high resolution and has many different options for settings? The lens is characterized by aperture and focal length, and it is one of the most important elements of the camera. For easiness, in Chapter 3 of this book, the author only considers a thin, simple lens. In the past, lenses were very hard to come by because they were very hard to make do to how difficult it was to get the light and colors focused on the right spot on the lens. Fortunately for us, modern technology has assisted a great deal and easily makes lens designs for camera producers now. What is F-stop? F-stop can also be written as f/N and is basically how shallow or how deep you want your picture to appear. In other words, how blurred you want the background to be. The bigger the F-stop, the less blur there is. The smaller the F-stop, the more blur there is. Why is my photo grainy sometimes but other times it’s very clear? Well it can depend on your lens, but it also comes from the pixels in your image! This is also called resolution. The more pixels you have, the higher in resolution your picture is because if you have, say, a 5,000 x 5,000 pixel image, that means there are 25,000,000 pixels so they are really small! However, the fewer pixels you have, the lower the resolution is going to be, and as such more grainy. Say, if you have a 200 x 200 pixel image, that’s only 40,000 pixels so they are going to be much bigger than a 5,000 x 5,000 pixel image. ISO can also affect the resolution of your photo, as your photo being too dark or too bright can make it blurry and grainy!

Alrighty so something unique about me would be that I actually have 3 dream jobs… which you’ll find out what they are in a minute or two!

Q1~ What is your favorite book?

A1~ Oooooooh that is hard. Hmmmmmmm. *Meghan deliberates for the rest of her life while everyone anxiously waits for her answer………….*

………………

……….

…..

..

.

I guess I would have to say the Bible as I couldn’t choose just one “regular” book as a favorite.

Q2~ LOTR or Narnia?

Oh that is really hard too. Annagracious why must you ask such difficult questions?!?! I think I like Narnia better currently, mainly cause of Aslan and the little mouse warrior that I can’t remember his name for the life of me at the moment, but that may change once I have finally made it through the third LOTR movie. I love some of the characters in LOTR though…. Mainly Treebeard and every. Single. Sarcastic. Character. (I get a loooooot of sarcasm from my dad’s side of the family much to the chagrin of my mother😁)

Q3~ If you could meet with a historical figure and talk with them for a day, who would you choose?

Hmmm probably Esther from the Bible. Or Ruth. But I really admire Esther.

Q4~ Who is your favorite storybook character?

Ooooh ummmmmmmmmmmm….. *everyone waits again……*

I would have to say probably Rose from a series I read recently. She is a photographer who likes to solve mysteries as well. But that’ll prob change as I’m currently reading a military K-9 series. Who knows!

Q5~ What is your dream job? (Told ya we would get to it in a minute or two!)

A6~ My top dream job is a Navy MCS (aka a Mass Communications Specialist in the US Navy, someone who does photography, graphic design, and more while serving their country.) However, I would also like to be a Wedding (and other people/events) Photographer as well as a loving wife someday should the Lord have someone for me. If not, I’m totally fine and happy to stay a single Pringle!

Q6~ Would you rather spend time with a crowd of people or just a few?

A7~ Hmmmmm probably just a few. But it depends on the people. Like if it’s the option of all 5 of my siblings or friends, then I would most likely pick friends. But I love crowds too… as long as there is someone with me lol. I’ve read too many Christian horror mystery books to be alone as a single gal in a crowd😂 My imagination runs wild let alone what could happen in this crazy world.

Q7~ Introvert, Extrovert, or Ambivert?

A7~ Oh definitely EXTROVERT. However after being around people all day I need some me time. But only some people. You know those friends that are mentally and/or physically exhausting? Yeah after being around them all day. But I love hanging out with them anyway. And with people who aren’t like that!

Q8~ Would you rather read a Thriller or a Mystery?

A8~ Ummm can I pick Thriller Mystery? I guess Mystery.

And last but not least, Q9~ Fruits or Vegetables?

A9~ Ohhhhhh I think I would have to choose Fruit. But I really love some of the veggies as well.

Alrighty here are my questions for you!

Q1~ Favorite Color?

Q2~ Do you have a crush/boyfriend/girlfriend/fiancé/hubby/wifey?

Q3~ Who is your favorite family member, what is your relationship with them, and why?

Q4~ What is your favorite restaurant?

Q5~ Do you have any pets, what animal(s) are they if so, and how many? Which is your favorite and which favors you the most?

Q6~ How many siblings do you have and which is your favorite? Who is your parents favorite?

Q7~ How hard/difficult do you think it is for the opposite gender to ask someone out? Why? (Yes I know this one is kinda weird but when we went over this in a small group recently it really helped us understand the other gender a little more😉)

Q8~ (I know Annagracious did this one already but I believe it’s a really good one!) What is your dream job?

And last but certainly not least,

Q9~ Apple or Samsung? Or others???

Ok I nominate:

More About Me Tag

Hi y’all! This is the More About Me tag sent to me and created by Annagracious over at Anna’s Idea Blog.

1- What’s your favorite book?

Hm I would say the MEV Journaling Bible cause I could never choose a favorite book of all the regular books I own lol.

2- If you had $1 million dollars, what would you do with it?

First tithe of course, then taxes cause they would def take a chunk out of it. After those…… well you know that library in the Beast’s castle in Beauty and the Beast?

3- What’s your dream job?

I would say probably wedding/general photographer, along with some graphic design on the side. However, I do have one other dream job but I’m not ready to share what that is just yet as I haven’t decided if I’m actually going to apply when I’m old enough yet.

4- What is/was your favorite subject in school?

Oh that’s a difficult one. Just kidding. Definitely lunch. After that…. Probably Art or music.

5- What’s your favorite kind of pizza?

Garlic crust with extra Alfredo and light cheese and sliced black olives. None of that weird pineapple stuff or anchovies for me!

6- What’s your favorite color?

Definitely rose gold. Altho I do really love teal. And black cause black goes with pretty much anything lol… and you can get a lot of shirts with funny text on them in the color black….. mainly photographer ones…….

7- Sum yourself up in 3 words.

Oooh that’s a hard one. Probably hardworking, photographer, and southern@💖

8- Who is your favorite author?

Ooooh that’s really hard. Currently I would say Shannon Messenger. (Sorry Aunt Maureen and cousin Naomi😁) Shannon Messenger’s books are are appropriate for any age and are just fun to read and take you out of your own problems for a little while. However, I have a LOOOOOOOOOT of second favorites.

9- What are some goals you’ve set for yourself this year?

Well for the upcoming school year… keep my part of mine and my sister’s room cleaner and more organized than I have in the past. (I really need an entire giant closet or small room for my diy/craft supplies and such but that won’t happen till I have my own place lol.) For the whole year of 2022…. I would say to be more patient, esp with my siblings and dad.

10- What’s your favorite type of bread?

Oh that is easy! Paneras copycat recipe of Breadbowls. Fresh from the oven.

My Favorite Bible verse….. ugh I can’t pick one lol. My favorite chapter would be Proverbs 31 though!

Sunset over Lake

Hey y’all! Sorry I haven’t posted a lot recently, life has been CRAZZZZZZY. However, I’m working on getting better at posting.

Today, I’m going to be posting about how to take an awesome sunset over a lake photo. And stay tuned for my next post, telling you a great way to edit this kind of photo!

Ok, so first you want to find a sunset and a lake. Or just a sunset, or just a lake😉. It’s still a amazing photo either way! Second, you want to hold up a phone (turned off so the screen won’t turn on and ruin your picture) or a mirror to the bottom of your camera lens, whether it’s a phone lens or a SLR or a DSLR, it doesn’t matter. However, you do NOT want your mirror or phone to have a lip at the edge. Such as a large case lip over the screen of the phone, or a frame on the mirror. Then you just line up the reflection of your phone that is in the phone screen/mirror to where you want your picture to end and be reflected. Then take your photo! It’s even better if you can get a sun flare, especially through a tree or telephone/power lines. (Example picture below)

Well that’s all the time I have for today bust stay tuned for my next post! (And I promise you it’ll be much less time between posts from now on than it has been!)

(You can see where it starts reflecting because normally, in the closest section of water to you, there is a parking lot.😉)
